The Area

Chinatown is contained in an area of 0.8 square kilometres within a span of three city blocks. The end of the Centre Street Bridge signals the entrance to both Chinatown and the downtown core. Centre Street continues through the neighbourhood, bisecting it into southeast and southwest halves.

The Bow River wraps Riverfront Avenue SE, allowing for easy access and serene north-facing views. The community is comprised entirely of multi-family dwellings, such as bright and spacious apartments, amidst the skyscrapers which dominate the city's skyline.

Chinatown benefits from being a culturally and historically significant part of the city, and the community is within a business improvement area. Chinatown is well-maintained, as it is integral to Calgary's identity.

Amenities, Attractions, & Entertainment

Chinatown sits as the ninth most walkable neighbourhood in the city, and you will be able locate all conveniences and essentials, and accomplish the majority of errands on foot. The area is famous for its delicious options for coffee shops, some of Calgary’s best oriental cuisine, bubble tea, and quick access to bars, pubs, and clubs in the downtown core.

The community is served by its Cultural Centre, which is fashioned after The Hall of Prayers in the Temple of Heaven, a World Heritage Site in the capital city of Beijing. The cultural centre contains a Chinese Artifacts Museum and an auditorium used for cultural performances.

Dragon City Mall offers several local businesses with unique offerings that you will not find anywhere else. You will find pharmacies, salons and aestheticians, clothing and grocery stores, and more incredible bubble tea within the mall!

Parks, Trails & Green Spaces

Chinatown is home to Sien Lok Park, 5.8 hectares of green space with cultural sculptures, a gazebo, seating areas, and a playground.

Prince's Island Park is within minutes of Chinatown, and this twenty-hectare park hosts some of the city's best summer attractions, from the Calgary Folk Music Festival to Carifest, and Shakespeare in the Park, to street performers. You will enjoy pathways, hiking trails, picnic areas, flower gardens in the summer, cross-country skiing, and skating in winter!

Westbound, along the Bow River Trail, is the beautiful Riverfront Avenue promenade which offers paved trails for walking and jogging, with segmented lanes for cycling and rollerblading observation decks and riverfront access. It is the perfect place to be on a summer day!

Education

Within the locale, you will find three public institutions for all levels. There is the Connaught School from kindergarten until grade six and Mount Royal School from grades seven until nine.

Western Canada High School is one of Calgary's finest public schools and offers the International Baccalaureate university preparatory program, French immersion training, and off-campus work experience to students.

Transportation & Accessibility

Chinatown boasts exceptional access to Calgary's transit system, with four bus lines operating within the area and several others in proximity.

You will be within walking distance of Calgary's downtown LRT stations, which offer east-to-westbound access via the Blue Line and the north-to-southbound Red Line. Chinatown will enjoy even more accessibility once the Green Line is complete, making the community one of the most accessible in the city.

Chinatown is also one of the city's most bike-friendly neighbourhoods, with abundant cycling lanes within the community and throughout the city grid.

Chinatown is also accessible by car via Centre Street, which offers northbound access towards significant work centres and southbound access throughout the core.
