Shawnessy

Shawnessy is a suburban neighbourhood located in the southwest quadrant of Calgary. Shawnessy is bounded north to south by Shawnessy Boulevard SW and 162 Avenue SW and east to west by James McKevitt Road SW and Macleod Trail. The community was established in 1981 and is named after British settler Samuel Shaw, who arrived in the area in 1882.

The Area

Shawnessy spans approximately 3.7 square kilometres of land, making it one of the largest communities in the area. The area is sufficient for accommodating a variety of dwellings such as primarily composed of single-family homes, with some townhouses and condominiums also available. The homes in Shawnessy were mainly built in the 1980s and 1990s, and many have undergone renovations or updates over the years.
The majority of the houses in Shawnessy are detached, two-story homes with attached garages.


There are also some bungalow-style homes and split-level homes available. The dwellings in Shawnessy are generally well-maintained and situated on quiet, tree-lined streets. The townhouses in Shawnessy are typically two or three stories tall, with attached garages and private patios or balconies. Some of the townhouses in the community have been recently renovated, while others may require some updating.

Amenities, Attractions, & Entertainment

Shawnessy has a variety of amenities, including Shawnessy Shopping Centre, where you will find daily essentials and much more. The shopping plaza features over 100 stores, restaurants, and services, such as barbers, and hair and nail salons, to name a few. There is also a public library, a YMCA, a movie theatre, and grocery and home hardware stores. 

Parks, Trails & Green Spaces

Residents of Shawnessy can enjoy many outdoor recreational activities, including hiking and biking, in the nearby Fish Creek Provincial Park. The park offers over 80 kilometres of trails, picnic areas, and a wildlife reserve. There are also several sports fields and playgrounds throughout the community. In addition to Fish Creek Provincial Park, Shawnessy has several other green spaces, including Shawinigan Park, which features a playground, soccer field, and basketball court. There is also a small park in the centre of the community with a pond and walking trails.

Transportation & Accessibility 

Shawnessy is well connected to the rest of the city via public transportation. The Shawnessy CTrain station, which is located at the Shawnessy Shopping Centre, provides access to downtown Calgary and other parts of the city. There are also several bus routes that serve the community, allowing a 30-commute as far north as Alyth-Manchester, east as Auburn Bay, and south as Academy. 

Shawnessy has major roads nearby, including Macleod Trail and Highway 22X, which provide access to other parts of Calgary and the surrounding area. You will have two routes to the downtown core within 20 minutes under ideal conditions.
