Temple was established as a community in 1977, and its development was completed in the 1990s. The community was named after Robert Temple, a local rancher who settled in the area in the early 1900s. Today, the locale comprises 2.6 square kilometres, suitable for predominantly single-family detached homes, but there are also a handful of townhouses and duplexes in the community.

Temple offers several recreational opportunities for residents and visitors. Templegreen Park is a popular destination for outdoor activities, including soccer and baseball. There are several other parks and playgrounds in the community, including Templemont.

Residents of Temple enjoy green spaces located throughout the community. In addition to the parks mentioned above, there are also several natural areas and walking paths. The Nose Creek Valley is located just east of the community, offering a scenic place to walk, run, or bike. Park, Templewood Park, and Templehill Park.

The community of Temple is well connected to the rest of Calgary through several major roadways, including McKnight Boulevard and 68 Street E. Stoney Trail and 16th Avenue NE (The Trans-Canada Highway) are also accessible to Temple.
The community is also served by three bus routes that allow a 30-minute commute as far north as Saddle Ridge, south as Forest Lawn Heights, and west as Vista Heights.
