Search homes for sale in Calgary Northwest by neighborhood.
Calgary's Northwest is defined by its many residential communities lining the Bow River and surrounding Nose Hill Park. It is the largest school district in the city thanks to the University of Calgary and contains a large portion of Bow River and the Bow River Pathway that runs along the south. The communities of Hamptons and Edgemont separate it from North Calgary and University Heights and Collingwood separate it from City Centre. The opposite end contains Rocky Ridge and the large estates that fill out the land outside.
If you are looking for a place away from the centre of the city then it may be a good idea to look into one of the residential communities in the north. Neighbourhoods like Scenic Acres, Arbour Lake, Royal Oak and Tuscany are almost entirely made up of single-family detached houses in quiet areas away from the city. The houses in these neighbourhoods are larger than many urban communities, which makes them ideal for young families looking for a private and secure place where they can raise their children without worrying about having to relocate.
The University of Calgary is located in the Northwest and is home to over 30,000 staff and students each year. Along with the University, the area contains the Foothills Medical Centre, the Alberta Children's Hospital, the Olympic Oval and the Foothills Athletic Park, which contains The Volleydome, Norma Bush Arena and McMahon Stadium. The McMahon Stadium hosts many events and several sports teams, including the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL. The University of Calgary and University Heights community mark the end of the Northwest, serving as the border between it and City Centre.
The Bow River runs through the communities of the Northwest, with the sprawling waterside being followed the entire length by the Bow River Pathway. This massive trail gives hikers, joggers, bikers and walkers an equal opportunity to get some exercise and enjoy the riverside either outside of their community or take the chance to follow it the entire length and see more of the city. Taking the time to walk along the river also allows residents to visit the many parks that are found on the water. Baker Park, Bowmont Park, Shouldice Park and Edworthy Park are all in the Northwest and connected by the Bow River Pathway.
While the Northwest is mainly residential, there are several commercial regions that provide shops, restaurants and entertainment to the residents. Following Crowchild Trail from the north towards the University will bring locals past Crowfoot Crossing all the way to the Brentwood Village Shopping Centre, with major retailers like Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Canadian Tire in between. A quick drive along this roadway will take locals and visitors past many boutique shops and ethnic restaurants.
There is a home for everybody in Northwest Calgary. Any buyers who are looking for something larger than the standard detached house can rest easy knowing that prestigious communities with million dollar mansions can also be found in the region. Neighbourhoods like Lynx Ridge offer luxurious estates built on massive lots in some of the most sought after areas of Calgary. The homes are built with top-of-the-line construction from some of the most reputable developers in the city. Buying and selling real estate at this price point has unique challenges. Many buyers are not serious and take the open houses as a chance to see inside an area they would not normally have access to. Working with a real estate professional guarantees the home will only be shown to serious buyers. Alternatively, people looking to purchase a home at this price point should also work with a real estate professional so that the seller will know they are a serious buyer.
