East Calgary Real Estate Information

Located in the southern region of the province of Alberta, East Calgary is situated to the east of the Bow River and includes the communities of Sunridge, Falconridge, Penbrooke Meadows, Forest Lawn and Southview.

The area that makes up modern day Calgary was once inhabited by the Blackfoot Natives, and in the 18th century it was a site for a post of the North-West Mounted Police. In 1883, the area became a hub for commercial activity with the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway. It became incorporated as a city in 1884. With the advent of farming and agriculture in the 19th century, Calgary experienced dramatic settlement. The discovery of oil in 1947 has shaped the economy of the city and Alberta, and since then it has developed into one of the country's most prominent metropolitan centres.

With the proximity of the popular town of Banff and the Rocky Mountains, the city of Calgary and its Eastern section features the best amenities a city has to offer alongside the natural splendour of the local geography.

RECREATION & LOCAL CULTURE

The Eastern area of Calgary is home to a variety of physical activities for the outdoor enthusiast.

Valleyview Park is located within the regions parameters, as well as Elliston Regional Park where visitors can enjoy activities like walking, running, hiking and mountain biking.

For the golf enthusiast, the area also contains a number of courses including the Inglewood Golf & Curling Club, the Silverwings Link Golf Course and the McCall Lake Golf Course, which features an 18-hole golf course and a driving range.

Beyond the variety of recreation, there are also a number of retails options in the area including Sunridge Mall, Marlborough Mall and Deerfoot City, which features stores like Sport Chek, Urban Planet and Winners.

Calgary also features a number of attractions including Heritage Park, where visitors can learn about the history of the city, and Calaway Park, an amusement park that features a variety of rides, roller coasters and carnival games.

As one Western Canada's largest cities, there are also a wide range of culinary options the area affords including Rouge, Bonterra Trattoria, the River Café and Mercato, which features a market and restaurant that specializes in simple Italian dishes.

MAIN ROUTES & LOCAL TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS

Deerfoot Trail is the main road running parallel to East Calgary and it provides access from Southeast Calgary and the communities of McKenzie Towne and Quarry Park to Northeast Calgary and on to the city of Airdrie. The Trans-Canada Highway runs through the city, providing access in the West to the town of Banff and British Columbia, and east to Medicine Hat and the province of Saskatchewan.

Calgary is accessible by way of the light rail transit system known as the C-Train which runs through many communities in the center. In addition, there are more than 635 kilometres of bike paths for cyclists to travel along all year round.

The Calgary International Airport is located in the eastern portion of the city and provides both domestic and international flights.

EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS

The area of East Calgary contains a number of schools including Father Scollen Catholic School, St. Thomas More School, Escuela St. John Paul II Secondary School and St Damien School, which serves kindergarten through to Grade 6.

There are also a number of high schools including Bishop McNally and Ernest Morrow Junior High School.

For those seeking higher education, the area is served by Columbia College, SAIT Polytechnic, Alberta College of Art and Design, and the University of Calgary.
