Located in the city of Calgary in Southern Alberta, the Southeast area of Calgary is bordered roughly by MacLeod Trail SE in the West and Glenmore Trail in the North. While the area is one of Canada's largest cities and most expansive urban areas, it was originally settled by the Blackfoot native populations including the Blood, the Peigan and Tsuu T'ina First Nation natives. While it became a popular settlement in the late 18th century with the construction of a station for the Canadian Pacific Railway, it was agriculture and farming that brought many people to the region. The discovery of oil in the 1940s has since solidified the city's history as a business hub, a reputation that has diversified in recent years with the industries of financial services, tourism, energy, transportation and technology. With its close proximity to the recreational space of Fish Creek Provincial Park and its enviable location close to all the amenities of city life, Southeast Calgary is an ideal home for those who prefer the conveniences of an urban center with the solitude of suburban living.

Local Amenities & Recreation

With its location outside of the city's downtown core, Southeast Calgary has many recreational landscapes and green spaces available for outdoor activities. In addition to Ralph Klein Park and Douglasbank Park, Fish Creek Provincial Park, one of the largest urban parks in Canada, features the opportunity for activities including walking, hiking and biking. It is also home to an animal population that includes coyotes, owls, beavers and herons. Southeast Calgary features a number of courses for the avid golfer including the Heatherglen Golf Course, Maple Ridge Golf Course, McKenzie Meadows Golf Club and Blue Devil Golf Club. For those who like to shop, there are many retail options close by including the Midnapore Mall, Deerfoot Meadows and Southcentre, which features a range of high-end stores including Aritzia, Banana Republic and Ben Moss Jewellers. The Calgary Public Library has a number of branches in the city's Southeast including Quarry Park, Shaughnessy and Fish Creek, where loan materials like DVDs, books and magazines can be borrowed.

Schools & Higher Education Institutions

There are a number of schools located in Calgary's Southeast quadrant including Le Roi Daniels School, David Thompson School, Wilma Hansen School and Douglasdale School. Lord Beaverbrook, Bishop O'Byrne and Centennial High Schools are also located within the area's borders. For those seeking higher education, the city of Calgary is served by Columbia College, SAIT Polytechnic, Alberta College of Art and Design, and the University of Calgary, which offers a variety of undergraduate programs.

Main Routes & Local Transportation Options

Deerfoot Trail is the main road running through Southeast Calgary and it provides access from the southern suburbs of the city to Northeast Calgary and on to the city of Airdrie. The Trans-Canada Highway runs through the city, providing access in the west to the town of Banff and the province of British Columbia, and east to Medicine Hat and the province of Saskatchewan. The city's main transportation system is the C-Train, which is a light rail transit system that travels to many communities throughout the city. The Calgary International Airport is located in the northeastern portion of the city and provides both domestic and international flights to areas throughout Canada and the United States.

Annual Events & Festivals

The Calgary Farmers' Market has been a popular staple of the city since its creation in 2004 and features a variety of local farmers, food producers and vendors throughout the year. There are also a wide range of festivals that visit the city throughout the year including the Sled Island Music Festival in June, the Folk Music Festival in July and the Calgary International Blues Festival in July, which has featured a variety of popular performers throughout the years. One of the most popular and well known events in the city is the Calgary Stampede, which is held each July and is known as the greatest outdoor show on earth. In addition to a variety of rides, shows and midway foods, the event plays host to traditional rodeo events like chuck wagon racing, calf roping and bull riding.
