With the development of a post for the North-West Mounted Police and construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway, the area became particularly popular for settlers who were looking for land to farm. Calgary was incorporated as a city in 1884 and it developed into an important hub for the industries of farming and agriculture. While the city has a relatively diversified local economy that includes energy, tourism and technology, it has been heavily linked to the oil industry since its discovery in the 1940s. As one of the most prominent metropolitan cities in Western Canada, Calgary is famously known for the Calgary Stampede and hosting the 1988 Winter Olympics. Physical Recreation & Local Culture

MacLeod Trail SE runs to the east of West Calgary and provides northern access to the downtown core and southern access to the communities of Okotoks and High River. Crowchild Trail SW is a major thoroughfare running through the area and provides access to the city's Northwest including the University of Calgary and the communities of Brentwood, Royal Oak and Tuscany. The light rail transit system known as the C-Train is the public transit system that provides access to many communities throughout the city of Calgary. The Calgary International Airport is located in the eastern portion of the city and offers flights to domestic and international locations. 

Annual Events & Local Festivals

West Calgary and the city of Calgary are host to a number of popular events for visitors and tourists throughout the year. In addition to the Sled Island Music Festival in June, the Folk Music Festival in July and the Calgary International Blues Festival in July, the city also hosts the Calgary Dragon Boat Race & Festival. Held in the middle of August, the festival features a variety of races, games, food trucks, musical acts and cultural festivities. As one of the most popular events in Calgary and around the world, the Calgary Stampede in July is known as the greatest outdoor show on earth. In addition to traditional rodeo events like calf roping, chuck wagon racing and bull riding, the annual event also features carnival rides, food vendors and live music performances. Calgary Winterfest is held in February to commemorate the 1988 Winter Olympic Games and features popular sights and events like ice sculptures, dogsled races, live music and cultural dances.
