The Area
Comprised of 0.5 square kilometres, East Village was established in 1900, making it one of the oldest communities in Calgary. However, the properties that you will find are new and modern high-rise apartments and upscale condominiums with riverfront views. Calgary's East Village has benefitted immensely from an area redevelopment plan enacted in 2005. After decades of work and billions of dollars of investments, the locale is now a rapidly growing and thriving community.
This community is a premier option for young professionals who work within the downtown core and first-time home-buyers, as it offers fantastic amenities and conveniences, affordable and attractive options, and proximity to major work centres.
Amenities, Attractions, & Entertainment
As Calgary's eighth most walkable neighbourhood, according to Walk Score, residents of East Village enjoy quick access to an abundance of amenities within walking distance. You will love the high concentration of coffee, shops, restaurants, and bars within the locale. There are grocery stores within the community and the immediate area, providing variety and options.
The community maintains its connection to the past through Fort Calgary, and this historical centre is located within the East Village, ensuring the communities heritage value.
The community is still benefitting from the investment within the area and is now home to several popular restaurants with patios near the riverside. The National Music Centre of Canada and the state-of-the-art Calgary Central Library are found in the community.
In the commercial district nearby, you will find Stephen Avenue for more nightlife options, live shows, and some of the top restaurants in the city. The Core Shopping Centre offers you an enhanced shopping experience, with hundreds of options for retail stores, upscale boutiques, and restaurants.
Family-friendly venues such as the Telus Spark Centre, the Calgary Zoo, and the Scotiabank Saddledome are accessible within 10 minutes. You are spoiled for choice options on family days!
Parks, Trails & Green Spaces
East Village is in proximity to spectacular green spaces, with riverfront access along the northeastern border. The Jack and Jean Leslie River Walk is one of Calgary's sacred gems and sits right at your doorstep.
St. Patrick Island Park boasts 31 hectares of land for elevated vantage points, scenic views, grassy knolls, and events for the summer. Scotsman’s Hill and the Skyline Viewpoint provide unmatched perspectives of Calgary, and are a must-see!
Education
You will have three options for public schools within the area. Ramsay Elementary School serves students from kindergarten to grade six. Mount Royal Junior High School is an excellent option for grades seven to nine.
Western Canada High School is one of the best in the city for high school. Western offers French immersion programs, the prestigious International Baccalaureate program, career-focused work experience, dual credit, and extra-curricular activities.
Transportation & Accessibility
East Village is one of the most bike-friendly neighbourhoods in Calgary, with several bike lanes and trails located throughout the community. You will also enjoy easy access to a variety of bus routes that operate within the downtown core.
These lines will allow for a 30-minute commute to as far north as Huntington Hills, as east as Forest Lawn, as south as Southwood, and west as Aspen Woods. The LRT is completely free to ride within the commercial district, and both the Red and Blue Lines will allow for access throughout the city.
Your central placement within the city will place you within proximity to other major work centres. Crowchild Trail will facilitate a 15-minute commute to the University of Calgary and the Foothills Medical Centre.
