While the area that makes up modern-day Calgary was once inhabited by the Blackfoot Natives, it began to be settled by the Europeans in the 18th century following the arrival of John Glenn. The city was initially known as Fort Brisebois, but it was renamed Fort Calgary in 1876 once the North-West Mounted Police established a post and a Canadian Pacific Railway station was constructed. Calgary was incorporated as a city in 1884, and soon after it experienced rapid settlement with the development of industries like farming and agriculture. While the city has a diversified economy that includes financial services, energy, tourism and transportation, it was the discovery of oil in the 19th century that led to the its boom and has made it one of Canada's most metropolitan urban centres. The city also has the distinction of being the first Canadian city to host the Winter Olympics in 1988. Local Recreation and Cultural Opportunities

South Calgary features a variety of opportunities for recreation and physical activity within its borders. In addition to the Inglewood Wildlands and Sue Higgins Park, South Calgary contains Fish Creek Provincial Park, where visitors to the park can participate in everything from hiking to walking to biking to nature trails and animal spotting. The Weaselhead Natural Area is also located in South Calgary and stretches for 237 hectares, featuring activities as diverse as canoeing, summer berry picking and birdwatching. Main Thoroughfares and Local Transportation

MacLeod Trail SE runs right through the center of South Calgary and provides northern access to the downtown core and south into the communities of Okotoks and High River. The Trans-Canada Highway also travels into the heart of the city, providing access in the west to the province of British Columbia and Banff, and east to Medicine Hat and the province of Saskatchewan. The main means of public transit is the C-Train, a light rail transit system which has stations in many communities throughout the city. South Calgary and the larger center also have a number of biking trails that provide cyclists with access in and out of different areas of the center. The Calgary International Airport is located east of Calgary and provides both domestic and international flights to locations within Canada and the United States.

Educational Institutions

South Calgary has a number of educational institutions in the area including Willow Park School, Altadore School and St James School, which serves student from Kindergarten through to Grade 9. There are also a number of high schools including Central Memorial, Lord Shaughnessy and Lord Beaverbrook. The city boasts a number of higher educational institutions including the University of Calgary, the Alberta College of Art and Design and Columbia College, a college which specializes in vocational education in fields that include business, health care and human services.
