Moving is often a time-consuming and stressful event, but you can make the process easier by using a variety of tips that are recommended by others. Here are 10 tips to use so that you can make the transition to your new home easier. Tip 1: Contact Professional Moving Companies Right Away  As soon as you know that you are moving, begin contacting moving companies in your city to receive estimates for services. When you have friends with trucks, you can recruit them to help you move a short distance, but you should still buy strong cardboard boxes or plastic totes, and you will want to protect your electronics, appliances and furniture with waterproof tarps. Tip 2: Begin Sorting Through Your Possessions Moving is an excellent opportunity to reduce your possessions so that your new home is less cluttered. Getting rid of unneeded stuff will also make moving easier and less expensive. If you have ancient furniture along with broken electronics and nonfunctional appliances, then you will not want to move these items. Tip 3: Organize for the Move It is easier for you or your professional movers to pack items when you are organized. You can do this by placing similar items together so that the packer can place the items in the correct type of container with the proper packing materials. You may have similar items such as books in different locations such as an office, bedroom or living room, but when these items are in the same place, it is faster to pack. Tip 4: Request Portable Packing Closets Moving companies have portable packing closets available, and if you have these items, then you can simply transfer the garments from a bedroom or hallway closet to the container. These portable containers have rods so you can leave the clothing on the hangers. This is also a good opportunity to purge the garments that no longer fit or that are in bad condition. Tip 5: Fold Linens Tightly to Make Items Smaller When you are packing the linens from your bathroom, kitchen and bedroom, fold the items carefully on a table while squeezing out the air. This process will make the items more compact, requiring less space in plastic totes or boxes, but the fabric items are less likely to wrinkle during the moving process. Tip 6: Pack Kitchen Items Carefully You can begin to pack some of your kitchen items right away by concentrating on the items that are seldom used. If you have special dishware or a punch bowl, then you can wrap and pack these items long before the move. Remember to use boxes that have dividers so that dishes and glassware won't move around in the container, leading to cracks and chips. Tip 7: Packing Bathroom Items If you plan to move containers of makeup or beauty care items, then you should make sure that the containers don't leak. Remember that a moving van may become cold so the liquids in containers can freeze. The movers may not want to pack liquid items so you may need to place these things in your own vehicle, so you should close the lids on the bottles tightly along with placing the items inside sealable plastic bags. Tip 8: Label Containers Immediately  As you are packing, make sure to label boxes and plastic totes immediately. Place several adhesive labels on each container in case one or more fall off. If you use different colours of labels, then you can remain more organized during the move. Tip 9: Have a Special Container for Your First Day While preparing to move, you should have a container for storing the items needed for your first day in a new home. Some of the things to pack in this box will include the items needed for the bathroom such as a rug for the floor, shower curtain and soap. For the kitchen, you should bring along disposable cups, utensils and plates along with a skillet and canned food. Tip 10: Place Unloaded Containers in the Proper Rooms When you arrive at your new home or apartment, make sure that the movers place the containers in the proper rooms. If you have colour coded the labels on the boxes, then it is easier to walk through an apartment or home to confirm that the boxes are in the proper locations. In addition, the movers should place heavy furniture, electronics and appliances in the correct locations so that you won't need to move the items. Posted by Liv Real Estate on
