We haven't had much summer in Edmonton yet this year but we're getting a taste of it now, and if you're like me, I'm counting on my a/c in this warm weather. Regular maintenance of your HVAC system, including the air conditioner, can prevent major breakdowns and repair costs. Review this air conditioner maintenance checklist and ensure your AC is getting serviced annually. In the meantime, here are some warning signs that something is wrong with your air conditioning and what you can do about it:

There’s water pooling around the AC unit.

Condensation will naturally form inside your AC unit as it runs. This is nothing to worry about. This moisture is drained away by a drain tube, when the unit is in good working order. If you notice pools of water around your unit’s exterior, it could mean there is something wrong with the drain tube. It could be broken or clogged. Call Edmonton air conditioning companies to inspect and repair the problem for you.

The cool air isn’t that cool at all.

If your HVAC system is blowing out normal, room temperature air while in cooling mode, it could mean there is a refrigerant leak. An HVAC tech can check the compressor or condenser for damage and fix the leak. If it doesn’t have enough air coolant, it is not going to do its job.

The airflow feels low.

If one room is getting good cool air flow and other rooms barely anything, there is something wrong with your air conditioner. It could be a damaged blower fan, blocked ductwork or even something wrong with the compressor. Low air flow is a problem that can get worse if ignored. Contact an AC tech to check this out right away.

Your energy bills have spiked.

A sudden spike in energy bills, higher than a typical summer’s cooling bill, could mean something is wrong with your HVAC system. There are many things that can make your AC work harder than it should. You might need to clean the system, book a tune up service or ensure there are no leaks or damage to the unit. A strained air conditioner will produce higher bills, have a reduced lifespan and fail to keep your home cool and comfortable when you need it to the most.

Strange smells and sounds.

How your air conditioning smells and sounds can indicate how it is working. If you smell an electrical odour, it could mean there is something overheating in the electrical work and you should call a professional right away. If it smells musty, you might have mold or mildew in your ductwork or in the unit itself. Keep your ears open for strange sounds too. Your AC will make a little bit of noise, but any clanging, clanking, banging or whistling indicate a problem. It can be a loose screw or a sign of a bigger issue. Book AC service as soon as possible. There are some simple fixes you can complete yourself. Learn how to check your air conditioner before calling for service. Posted by Liv Real Estate on
