Winter is a great time to tackle the home renovation projects you’ve been putting off. Here are some reasons why:

It’s a slow time for contractors.

Every trade is different, but for many renovation contractors the winter is a slower time. Therefore, they might have more availability and you won’t have to fight for their time. That means more flexible scheduling and quicker end dates for your home remodel. Because there is less demand for their services, less supply is required. Some contractors might be more willing to negotiate prices on projects when they have less to work on.

Suppliers are clearing last year’s stock.

When it comes to materials, supplies, appliances, furniture and other home renovation materials, retailers could be clearing last year's inventory to make room for new products. Depending on what you’re in the market for, you could take advantage of some great discounts. The cost of construction materials can also fluctuate based on supply and demand. When there is less demand for things like lumber, flooring and fixtures, you might be able to get them for less than other times of the year. Keep your eyes peeled for sales at building supply stores. If you’re a little patient, you could save big on your home renovation or from flooring companies in Calgary.

You can improve energy efficiency.

Heating our homes in an Alberta winter is not cheap. In fact, it can account for over 50 percent of an average home’s energy consumption in the winter. Investing in some energy-efficient home improvements this winter can help you save money while the blizzards blow outside. This winter might be the right time to upgrade your HVAC system to a high-efficiency furnace. A standard furnace today is about 80% efficient. The rest of the energy escapes through the chimney vent. 80% is still a lot better than old, inefficient models. There are furnaces on the market that are 95% efficient and are listed with an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating. These furnaces cost about a third more than the standard, but it will pay for itself in energy savings in a few short years. Another efficiency upgrade that has a good return on investment is an attic insulation installation. This report shows that fibreglass attic insulation has a 107% return on investment. That means you’ll get more money back than you paid for the installation in energy savings and at resale. If you’re investing in the new furnace, make sure all that nice warm air isn’t escaping through the ceiling. Posted by Liv Real Estate on
